Hostel for Homeless People - Peter Barber
Communal facilities:
"They are positioned around the courtyard at ground floor level to encourage encounters between the hostel's occupants and their support staff. En suite rooms are spread throughout the buildings that encircle the courtyard, including two new additions at either end that contain shared living, kitchen and dining spaces for the hostel's more independent users." "I was interested in the collage of these materials and in the blurring of the old and the new. I like when you get old buildings that have been added to so it becomes a bit of a puzzle to figure out where the old ends and the new begins." Apartment Block in Stockholm - Utopia Arkitekter
In this project, what interested me the most were the facades of the apartments which are terraced and offset to create dynamism, and to allow for balconies and forecourts. It is part of the concept of the Youth Hostel Project, to break with the monotony of the flat facades of the vernacular architecture. Movijovem Youth Hostel - ComA Architects
Located in Penhas da Saude and called Movijovem Youth Hostel, the timber-clad building houses 20 rooms. The design is based in two fundamental principals: the relationship with the old youth Hostel build and the architecture of the surroundings. This new architecture volume links perfectly with the local architecture, working as a contemporary interpretation of it.
